The armed forces of the industrial democracies have been undergoing major changes since the end of the Cold War. I have sought to trace out and explain these transformations through an anthropological lens: a focus on their cultural dimensions, a link between the micro and macro-levels of analysis, and the addition of a comparative perspective.
